Taking Stuff Apart: Coffee Machines

These are some broken coffee machines I've had hanging around for a while. The cheapest Mr. Coffee that Walmart sells and some fancy Morphy Richards coffee/espresso machine. The fancy one was from my first and only Woot Bag of Crap - they sent me a broken coffee machine.

Rather than throw them in the dumpster I decided to take them apart then throw them in the dumpster. Here they are:

Not much too Mr. Coffee:
Mr. Coffee Inside

The pieces slid out and that was all there is to it:
Mr. Coffee Electronics

There's a lot to the other one:

Most of the pieces clip in so it took some brute force to pull them apart:

Some electronics for the front panel:

The power circuitry was all hidden around back:

Pieces! I kept the heating elements from this one, maybe I'll make a little mug warmer or solder reflow table someday:

  1. Does the heater element do double duty as the warmer? I have one that does not have a warmer circuit, only a brew circuit that shuts off the heater after brewing and want to mod it so the heater turns into a warmer. It's a higher priced capresso 465 thermal but the same model 464 glass has the warmer circuit and I bet the pcb is the same with post brew heater function disabled. Everything is there, but the 465 had a heat shield/spacer between the heater and the carafe base. I removed the plate and now have a true hot plate but the heating element turns off after brew cycle where as the heated model turns heater element off after 2 hours. Is it same heat power as brew mode or do they reduce heat for warming? It has a 30C thermo switch soldered onto the heating element buy I would think the brew mode would use a 105C to raise brew temperature higher than boiling to promote percolation? Even the pcb has 2 leads marked warm1 and warm2.
